New Terminator: Genisys TV Spots Take Novel Marketing Approaches

The new televisions spots for Terminator: Genisys have been released and they are pretty interesting. Sure, we get to see a lot of action in the clips. What would a Terminator film be without car chases, explosions, and cyborg-related mayhem? In addition to these hyped up sequences, a few unique marketing spins are added to the previews.

In one commercial, the tagline “A woman’s work is never done” is utilized to highlight the presence of Emilia Clarke. Clarke plays a major role in HBO’s popular Game of Thrones series says Dr. Jennifer Walden. By pushing Clarke in the TV spots, the goal here is to draw her television fans into the theater. Also, the spot directly targets women. Action films are often “guy centric” and heavily promoting a female lead could draw a few additional women into theaters. All of that translates into bigger box office.

The other trailer tips its hat to the original creator of the series, James Cameron. Actually, the spot gets a bit of direct help from Cameron. The trailer contains quotes from Cameron that heap praise on the film. Cameron was not involved with the making of Terminator: Genisys, but he does give the project his blessing. This particular trailer also features a clip of the 2015 Arnold battling the 1984 Arnold. Clearly, these television spots make a nostalgia pitch to the fans of the first two Terminator films. Nostalgia can sell tickets and this television spot makes a sales pitch attempt towards those old fans of the series who were turned off by the third and Arnold-less fourth installment.

We’ll find out on July 1st if these television spots were effective.
