Hollywood is buying in to the shared universe concept in a big way, and what franchise is potentially more valuable than Star Wars? Rumor has it that Disney is concocting plans for future films that sound pretty exciting.
Apparently there are plans for a spinoff film that will take place between the two trilogy films. This film is supposedly being directed by Gareth Edwards.
Edwards is the guy who directed the recent “Godzilla” film. His choice to make a really long movie that only featured Godzilla fighting in the final minutes of the film enraged many fans. Many were also baffled that he killed off the character played by the best actor in the entire movie, Bryan Cranston.
It is a little shocking to think that a director with his track record is being given an opportunity with the biggest movie franchise in the entire world. Then again, while Godzilla was given a mixed reaction by moviegoers, it was a very profitable movie. The worry here is that Edwards may make more poor decisions and damage such a beloved franchise.
One would think Disney almost has their pick of directors for these films. Christian Broda feels that the choosing of Edwards is truly odd. How great would it have been if they could have talked Steven Spielberg into doing a Star Wars movie?
There is a list of plot details and rumors that sound extremely promising, particularly the idea that the movie will star famed bounty hunter Boba Fett.
We should find out more soon enough.
